Frequently Asked Questions - Solar Panels & Battery Storage
1. What is solar power, and how does it work?
Solar power is energy generated from the sun. Solar panels capture sunlight, sun radiation (Photons) and
convert it into electricity, which can be used to power your home. The panels are made of photovoltaic (PV)
cells that absorb photons and create direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then converted into
alternating current (AC) by an inverter, which is the type of power used in your home.
2. How much can I save with solar panels and battery storage?
The savings depend on several factors, including your current energy usage, the size of the solar system, and
how much sun radiation your home receives. On average, homeowners can expect to save up to 50% or more
on their energy bills. By pairing your solar panels with a battery storage system, you can store excess energy
and use it during high-demand times and or at night, increasing savings and reducing your reliance on the
grid.
3. How does battery storage work with solar panels?
Battery storage allows you to store excess energy generated by your solar panels during the day and use it
when the sun isn’t shining, such as at night or during dense cloudy days. The stored energy can be used to
power your home or charge an electric vehicle, reducing your reliance on grid electricity and maximizing your
savings.
4. Do I need a battery storage system with my solar panels?
While battery storage isn’t mandatory, it enhances the benefits of your solar panels by allowing you to store
energy for later use. Without a battery, any unused solar energy is sent back to the grid, often with lower
compensation rates. With a battery, you can store and use this energy yourself, further reducing your
electricity bills and increasing energy independence.
5. How long do solar panels and batteries last?
Solar panels typically last 30 to 35 years or more, with many manufacturers offering warranties of up to 25 and
30 years. Over time, the efficiency of solar panels decreases by around 0.5% per year.
Battery storage systems have an expected lifespan of about 15 to 20 years, depending on the type of battery,
usage, and environmental factors. Modern batteries, such as lithium-ion, tend to last longer and are more
efficient.
6. How much does it cost to install solar panels and battery storage?
The cost varies depending on your energy needs, the size of the system, and the type of equipment used. On
average, solar PV installation can range from £4,000 to £8,000 for a typical home. Adding battery storage may
cost an additional £3,000 to £6,000, funding is an option to help make an installation more affordable. The
saving can help towards the repayments of a loan. The installation cost can be recouped over time through
savings on energy bills. Payback period is typically between 5 to 10 years.
7. Can solar panels work on a cloudy day or in winter?
Yes, solar panels still generate power on cloudy days, although at a reduced rate compared to sunny days.
Even in winter, solar panels can produce energy, if there is daylight. While solar output is lower in the winter

months, battery storage allows you to store excess energy during the sunnier months for use when sunlight is
scarce. Sun radiation can penetrate most cloud cover.
8. Do I need planning permission for installing solar panels?
In most cases, solar panels do not require planning permission if you meet certain criteria. For homes in
conservation areas or listed buildings, planning permission may be necessary. However, installing battery
storage or EV charging points typically does not require planning permission. It’s always best to consult with a
professional installer like Green Globe Solar to ensure your installation complies with local regulations.
9. Will solar panels increase the value of my home?
Yes, installing solar panels has been shown to increase property value. Homes with solar systems tend to sell
faster and at higher prices, as prospective buyers see the long-term cost savings from lower energy bills and
reduced environmental impact. Adding battery storage further enhances the appeal, as it provides additional
energy security and independence.
10. Are solar panels and batteries maintenance-free?
Solar panels are generally low maintenance. You should have them cleaned periodically to remove dirt or
debris that could reduce efficiency. It’s also recommended to have them inspected every 1-2 years to ensure
they are performing optimally. Battery storage systems also require minimal maintenance but should be
checked annually by a professional to ensure the battery is functioning efficiently.
11. How does battery storage help during power outages?

With battery storage, your home will continue to have power even during grid outages. When the grid goes
down, your battery system will automatically provide backup power, keeping essential appliances running
until the grid is restored. This is especially useful in areas prone to frequent blackouts or during extreme
weather events. If you want this facility, then request the off-grid facility to be include within the quote.
12. Will my battery storage system work with an electric vehicle (EV)?
Yes! Many of our battery storage systems are compatible with electric vehicles. You can use the energy stored
in your battery system to charge your EV, making it even more cost-effective and sustainable to charge your
vehicle. When combined with solar panels, you can generate your own electricity to charge your car
for free during the day. Discuss this with us when you start the quoting process.
13. Can I monitor my solar and battery storage system remotely?
Yes! Most modern solar panel and battery storage systems come with smart monitoring apps that allow you to
track your energy production, consumption, and storage levels remotely. This means you can always know
how much energy you’re generating, storing, and using in real time. With Green Globe Solar, we can help you
set up monitoring so you can stay on top of your energy use.
14. Can I still use electricity from the grid if I have solar panels and a battery?
Absolutely! Your solar panels and battery system work in conjunction with the grid. If your battery is full or
there isn’t enough solar power being generated, your home will draw power from the grid. However, with
battery storage, you’ll be using less grid power, which results in lower energy costs and
greater independence from traditional electricity providers.

15. What happens if my solar panels produce more electricity than I need?
Any excess energy generated by your solar panels can either be stored in your battery system or sent back to
the grid. If you have battery storage, you’ll be able to use that extra energy later, reducing your reliance on the
grid. If you don’t have battery storage, the excess energy is sent to the grid, where you may receive credits or
payments for the electricity you provide. You need to set this facility up with your energy provider

Client
Green Globe Solar have been very informative and have given a complete service from start to finish in a very timely and friendly fashion. Initially useful to explore many different potential solar setups with cost advice for each along the way, before taking the plunge. Very efficient installation with attention to detail for wiring routes and locations for the Solar System Invertor and battery. We are now also considering further modifications to maintain power when mains supply is disturbed. I was quite sceptical before about the efficiency, but the monitoring system, allows me to see in real time the advantages of sunny days. We are now 4 months into the benefit of 50% electricity supplied free from solar and exploring ways for payment of our panels feeding the grid going forward. Our target is to achieve the prediction of total payback within 6 years and then all future electricity will be only 33% of the cost that others will need pay. Would be pleased to recommend Green Globe Solar based on my experience.
